" We don't teach 6th class
maths to 1st class children.....
Same applies to sport !
Don't teach 12 year old sport skills to 6 year old children. "

BUILDING BETTER PLAYERS
STEP BY STEP
A player development pathway helps coaches deliver age-appropriate training, introduce skills progressively, and support steady player growth.

WHAT IS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
A Player Development Pathway is a structured plan for long-term athlete growth, developing the right skills at the right stages to help players reach their full potential.

WHY DO WE NEED A PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
A Player Development Pathway helps players reach their potential through age-appropriate training. It ensures clarity at each stage, focusing on essential skills while keeping players engaged for a brighter future in sport.
PLAYER PATHWAY DEVELOPMENT PHASES
We look to the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association), which outlines a 6-phase Player Development Pathway to guide players from their first introduction to Gaelic games all the way through to becoming mentors or leaders in the sport. We have created a clear breakdown for each phase.
Each phase is colour coded throughout the resource.
