Rebel Óg North has become a strong and fast-growing region, competing successfully from youth to adult level in gaelic sport. To keep improving and performing at the top in Cork GAA, this Player Pathway outlines how you can support every player in the region aim strive and thrive.

A Player Pathway guides coaches, managers, mentors, teachers and parents in developing young players from nursery to 18+ in Sport. It offers clear phases, key skills, and player characteristics with a current focus for football, hurling, and camogie—helping every child reach their full potential.

WHY DO WE NEED A PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY

A Player Development Pathway helps players reach their full potential through age-appropriate training. It provides consistency and clear focus at every stage, developing the right skills at the right time while keeping players engaged and building a stronger future for the sport.

Don't teach 12 year old sport skills to 6 year old children. "

PLAYER PATHWAY DEVELOPMENT PHASES

For Duhallow we look to the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association), which outlines a 6-phase Player Development Pathway to guide players from their first introduction to Gaelic games all the way through to becoming mentors or leaders in the sport. We have created a clear breakdown for each phase.

INTRODUCTION:

:NURSERY 4-7 YEARS

Focus: Fun, enjoyment, and basic movement skills, social interaction & developing a love for the game. No performance or competition pressure is placed on children at this stage.
Goal: Develop agility, balance, coordination, and a love for sport through simple, playful activities.

LEARNING IN MY CLUB ;

8-12 YEARS

Focus: Learning core skills.
Goal: Introduce basic technical skills (catching, kicking, striking, passing) in small-sided games to promote confidence and creativity.
Developing fundamental skills, understanding simple game concepts, and fostering participation in a supportive club environment.

LEARNING TO TRAIN

13-15 YEARS

Focus: Skill development and game understanding.
Goal: Refine techniques, develop teamwork, and build awareness of positioning and decision-making.
Encourages teamwork, sharing, and interacting with peers. Builds confidence and positive experiences with physical activity.

PERFORMING IN MY CLUB 16-18 YEARS

Focus: Building physical and tactical foundations.
Goal: Improve fitness, strength, and tactical awareness while maintaining skill quality under pressure.
High-performance preparation; tactical awareness, physical conditioning, and performing consistently in competitive matches.

WINNING IN MY CLUB

18+

Focus: High-level performance and consistency.
Goal: Maximize potential, refine decision-making, and maintain peak performance at club, county, or elite level.
Elite-level performance, leadership within teams, competing at the highest club and inter-county levels; focus on success and achievement.

GIVING BACK IN MY CLUB AS AN ADULT

Focus: Mentoring and coaching younger players. Leadership and role modeling. Volunteering in club activities
Goal: Contribute to the club’s growth. Support the next generation
Promote lifelong participation in Gaelic games
